Geomatics

Spatial information underpins the digital transformation of society and economy, and contributes significantly to any nation’s gross domestic product. Geomatics studies the production, management, analysis and communication of spatial information. It takes streams of data, links this data to location and time, and answers the fundamental societal questions of ‘where’ and ‘when’ in public administration and safety, disaster management, navigation, space and infrastructure management, and many other application areas.

Research centres

In addition, we contribute to many centres around the campus, such as AURIN and the ICA-OSGeo laboratory at University of Melbourne. Geomatics is deeply embedded in the research strategies of the University and the Melbourne School of Engineering, where it contributes for example to Data and Society, Advanced Transport, and Future Infrastructure.

The importance of spatial information for many disciplines is reflected in Spatial@Melbourne, a platform coordinated by Geomatics.
